MetaphorA metaphor is a comparison between two things that replaces the name of an object with that of another. For example, a famous line from Romeo and Juliet has Romeo proclaiming
“Juliet is the sun." |
A simile is a comparison between two things, and uses the words “like” or “as” to draw the comparison.

How to Write a Metaphor
- Think imaginatively about what you're trying to describe (Yourself). What characteristics do you have? ...
- Free-associate... list out other things/animals/objects that have those characteristics
- Decide what kind of mood you'd like to set...funny, somber, cheery...
- Run with it...draft a version (then share it with your neighbor or teacher)
- Tighten it up...transform your comparisons into metaphors (get the structure right)
- Stretch your ideas...embellish and make it sound more grand!
Here are a few ideas:
I Am... a model on the runway of life
I am...Notes tuned to a glorious melody
I am...a seed of hope cast out by the wind
I am Not...a sloth, listless and lazy
I am not...the worm in your bad apple

Project Criteria
- Write 5 or more "I am..." and "I am not..." metaphors to choose from for this assignment
- Include your name and your metaphor (i.e. Karissa “I am a tightrope walker balancing between heart and mind” or “I am not…”)
- Readability of text 40 pt font or LARGER
- Collage images should illustrate your metaphor – laminated for final cover

- Create a FOCAL POINT - an area to draw your viewer’s attention.
- Incorporate VARIETY (3-4 different) lines-thick/thin, shapes- organic/geometric, textures, and patterns.
- Demonstrate a type of visual balance (even amount of carved and uncarved areas) + filling the area (symmetrical or asymmetrical)
- Create an edition of 3-4 Perfect FINAL prints 9x12 (all ) - BEST one is laminated for the final cover
