Level 2 Multi-block Styrofoam (Printing Variations)
Note: MAke Embossed index cards for texture!
- Soak 4x6 in index cards in a basin of water for a few minutes.
- Collect low relief - textures that can be pressed into the card to create a raised or recessed design.
- Blot the index cards with paper towel, place the card over the found textures, and put a dry paper towel on top.
- Run the textures and index card through a tightly adjusted printing press (back and forth)
- carefully remove the embossed card and allow it to dry
- Glue it to a cardboard backing and coat with gel medium to seal the paper for the ink.
- Print the card in the same delicate manner you would print the styrofoam blocks.
- Use these textures for backgrounds and boarders on your multi-block mono prints.

Content Criteria:
- 3-5 Thumbnail sketches visually representing your three words. One sketch will focus on the NOUN, one will focus on the ADJECTIVE, and one will focus on the VERB
- Words should be easily recognizable within the image.
- Consider which areas will read as INK surface vs Recessed LINE (the paper)
- How will you incorporate the negative space into the image? (Consider background texture, multiple color printing layers, blend roll, off-set layering, pivot, slide...)
Final Design:
- 4 1/2 x 6 basically fill 70-80%
- some small (detailed) and some larger areas
- Use of varying line thickness for details.
- Balance between ink and line areas
- No excess marks- accidental dents in the plate, finger prints, inky edges,
- Image must maintain registered for multiple layers

Prints will be done in black ink.
Design will be done on one layer. Prints will be done using a registration page (pre-made) so they can print their collographs on the same paper. Use of pattern in the negative space, to create a range of value and add emphasis to the design |

Advanced students should be call upon their knowledge and experiment with the orientation and ink control. Advanced students should research alternative ways to create the print. |
